My car is getting inspected tomorrow, and today the drivers handle decided to stop working. After a short search online, I figured out how to access the inner handle mechanism, and compiled it in a guide for your dis pleasure.
One has to remove the entire door panel to access this piece. So that chrome housing around the handle, some trim pieces, pull handle and window crank all need to be removed.
I started with the striker trim, which is simply held on by two screws.
Next I went onto the dreaded window crank. I've never had luck removing these and usually wind up breaking something. This one turned out to be the simplest thing ever.
That curved tab protrudes out the back of the handle. You just push it away from the knob and it just slides off. Then the handle will slide off the shaft.
Next was to remove the trim around the inner handle. You need to remove the plastic backing first, which reveals a single screw. Once removed the trim comes right out.
The pull handle was next. Just two screw and that is off.
The knob also has to be removed. Simply unscrew.
Make sure to keep your parts neatly organized.
Next was another part I was dreading. The removal of the panel.
Came off incredibly easy. Just feel for clips and pry. Once all the clips are loose you have to pull up and the panel comes right off.
Panel removed.
Then just peel back the vapor barrier and inspect.
Son of a bitch bastard. I was hoping just something had come loose, but looks like it will need to be replaced. Looks like they range from about $20-$85 depending on which brand you go with. But hey, I found more rust, so yippee!
Bringing the car tomorrow morning for inspection, hopefully they've got one there, or it at least doesn't fail for anything else.

those black plastic bits around the handle in mine are all cracked. and I still can't get my doors to seat 100% proper after replacing the strikers. It rustles my jimmies.

I hate rust. Mine has rust behind the battery and when it rains the water goes all the way to the back. I'm welding new metal and doing the suspension during summer break.

Well I haven't put it back together yet, so as of now jimmies unrustled here.

I had that same issue. Did your battery tray rust out?
